… von Trier imagines satirically what it would look like if a woman really did embody all of the hysterical, irrational and deadly attributes which have historically been suspected of her. The unhinged viciousness of it all is supposed to point to the ridiculousness of folkloric associations of women with nature, mystery, witchcraft and hysteria.

“Eh this is about all the bad days in the world. I used to have some really bad days. And I kept them in a little box. And one day I threw them out into the yard. Oh, it’s just a couple little, innocent bad days. Well, we had a big rain… I don’t know what it was growing in, but I think we used to put eggshells out there and coffee grounds too. Don’t plant your bad days. They grow into weeks, the weeks grow into months, and before you know it you got yourself a bad year. Take it from me: CHOKE those little bad days! CHOKE ‘em down to nothing! They’re your days, CHOKE ‘em! You choke my days, I’ll choke yours. All right… It’s more than rain…” – t. waits

DB – … that we laugh at things that are genuinely frightening.
PJH – Yeah. I think so. It can be almost like an automatic nervous reaction. But I think it’s—they’re very close to each other, it’s hard to separate. I mean the classic thing is laughing so much that it turns into crying or vice versa… that’s happened to me many times.
